Native speaker

From Teflpedia

A native speaker is a speaker of a language which is the language they acquired as a child via first language acquisition.

This language is sometimes referred to as the first language, L1, mother tongue, native language, or arterial language.

There is sometimes debate about whether native speakers can "make errors,” even when what they say is considered sub- or non-standard use of the language. This is associated with the discussion about descriptive grammar and prescriptive grammar.
