My name is ... is often the first grammatical complete sentence that is learnt by English language learners at absolute beginner level.

It serves the function of making introductions. "My name is..." is often learned as a lexical chunk. It can also provide the first example of substitution, by substituting "my" for other dependent possessive determiners, particularly "his", "her" and "your".

They should also learn the question "What's your name?"

A lesser-used alternative to "My name is..." is "I am called..."
