A monkey letter is a written character that’s written with a descender that hangs down from the base line to the descent line, like a monkey’s tail.

Only lower case letters can be monkey letters. In the Roman alphabet, which is typically used for English, the letters lowercase G, lowercase J, lowercase P, lowercase Q, and lowercase Y are monkey letters. Lowercase F can also be a monkey letter in certain fonts.
