Manner clause

A manner clause is an adverbial clause that expresses manner, i.e. how something happens.

We can use

  • as
  • as if
  • as though
  • as + adverb + as


For example:

Type Example
as “He spent a lot of money as he was very rich
as + adverb + as “We did it as quietly as we could"
as if “He spent a lot of money as if he were very rich.”
as though “He spent a lot of money as though he were very rich.”
