Major clausal element

From Teflpedia

A major clausal element is a syntactic element that is analysed as the first level split of a clause.

In English (and related languages), there are two major clausal elements — the subject and the predicate.

The subject syntactically licenses the predicate, i.e. the predicate is dependent on the subject.
