Error
- Disambiguation: For Teflpedia’s errors see Teflpedia:Errors
An error is a use of language that does not conform to expected norms. This definition is dependent on two factors; (1) deciding on what language norms are, and (2) deciding which degree of conformity to those norms is.
Errors are often distinguished from mistakes and slips.
Language learners make frequent errors as they practice. Modern language teaching methodology recognises this and allow for it, though older methodologies were heavily focused on error reduction/error avoidance. Language learners often develop stabilised errors and fossilised errors.
Error analysis can identify what the error is and why the learner made it.
Error tolerance in informal speech tends to be great; in formal writing however errors are not tolerated.
Errors may be subject to error correction.
Error notation can be used to annotate errors in text.
