LGBTQI+

From Teflpedia
(Redirected from LGB)
Gay Pride marches are a visible celebration of differences.

LGBTQI+ (/elʤi:bi:ti:kju:(w)aɪplʌs/) is an acronym that is an umbrella term covering "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer, intersex, etc" - or perhaps a definition by exclusion; anyone who happens not to be both completely cisgendered and completely heteronormative.

As an acronym, it has had a noted historic tendency to get longer. It started off simply as LGB, then became LGBT, then LGBTQ, etc.

LGBTQI+ issues in ELT include discrimination, portrayals of people and their relationships in materials, dealing with casual homophobia and transphobia from students, etc

Although modern Western liberal democracies have strong individual rights, in conservative cultures same-sex relations and/or gender non-conformity may be frowned upon or criminalised. English learning and teaching occurs in a wide range of contexts all along this spectrum.
