Indirect question

From Teflpedia

An indirect question is a question that is asked indirectly, and thus is not a direct question. In English, we use various fixed phrases for asking indirect questions[1], including:

  • Could you tell me…
  • Would you mind telling me…
  • Would you please tell me…

Note that these are followed by the statement form of the sentence, rather than the question form. For example, we say "Could you tell me where the hotel is?" rather than *"Could you tell me where is the hotel?" (though the latter will be understood). Native speakers don’t always follow this rule in speech, to little consequence.

  1. These are technically known as what…? indirect question elements or something?
