IPA number

An IPA number is an identification number assigned to each symbol used within the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). This covers individual speech sounds, plus all the diacritics, brackets, etc. that the IPA uses.

Format[edit | edit source]

The basic format is a 3-digit number. The first number identifies which block the symbol belongs to:

Numbers Representing
1XX Consonant sounds
2XX retired and non-IPA consonants
3XX Vowel sounds
4XX Non-tone diacritics
5XX Suprasegmentals
6XX Extensions to the IPA
7XX Capital letters
9XX Transcription delimiters
