The ICAO Language Proficiency Rating Scale is a language proficiency rating scale used by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). It is applied to Aviation English.

There are a total of 6 levels, numbered 1–6, with 1 being the lowest level and 6 the highest.[1]
They are named as 1-Pre-Elementary, 2-Elementary, 3-Pre-operational, 4-operational, 5-Extended and 6-Expert. Only levels 4 and above are considered sufficient for aviation communication.
Each level has descriptions of the areas of (i) Pronunciation Structure, (ii) structure, (iii) vocabulary, (iv) comprehensions (v) interactions.
