How much money

From Teflpedia

How much presents a particular problem for low-elementary students as it has to be used with either be versus auxiliary do (with the verb cost) and conjugated for grammatical number.

Compare:

  • "How much is it?" + "It's 3 dollars".
  • "How much are they?" + "They are 3 dollars".
  • "How much does it cost?" + "It costs 3 dollars".
  • "How much do they cost?" + "They cost 3 dollars".

This may lead to errors, e.g.:

  • *"How much is it cost?"
  • *"How much does it?"
  • *"It cost 3 dollars" (third person -s error)
  • *"They costs 3 dollars".
