Hard v. hardly

From Teflpedia

Hard and hardly are often confused by learners.

  • "Hard" is an adjective and adverb with similar meanings.
  • "Hardly" is an adverb that has a different meaning to "hard" - consider its synonym "scarcely".

Students may overgeneralise the rule "add +ly to change an adjective into an adverb", to produce errors such as *"I work hardly".
