Get used to

From Teflpedia

Get used to is an English lexical-grammatical structure.

Meaning[edit]

Its meaning is similar to be used to (i.e. "accustomed to a trivial annoyance"), but suggests a change from not being accustomed to something to being accustomed to it.

For example:

  • "When we first moved to our house next to the railway lines, the noise of the trains bothered us, but it doesn't now we've got used to it."

If the progressive aspect is used, then it suggests that the change is not yet complete:

  • "When we first moved to our house next to the railway lines, the noise of the trains bothered us, but we're getting used to it, so it bothers us but not as much as it did at first."

Pedagogy[edit]

EFL learners may see "used to" and misidentify it as "used to", a distinct lexical-grammatical structure.
