Genie (/ʤi:ni:/) is the pseudonym of an American feral child who was the subject of linguistics research.[1]

Genie’s is one of the best-known case studies of language acquisition in a child with delayed linguistic development outside of studies on deaf children. In this case, her language acquisition was unlike usual first language acquisition as it occurred late, and rather therefore more like second language acquisition but without having an L1.

There were subsequent issues with research ethics.

As of 2022, Genie, now in her sixties, in the care of the State of California. Out of respect to her privacy, it is unlikely that more information will be confirmed while she remains alive.
