Fricative
From Teflpedia
A fricative (/ˈfrɪkətɪv/) is a consonant sound produced by forcing air through a narrow channel made by placing two speech articulators close together.
They may be subcategorised into sibilants and non-sibilant fricatives.
The fricatives in the Standard English phonemes are /f/, /v/, /θ/ /ð/, /s/, /z/ /ʃ/ and /ʒ/
- Non-sibilants:
- /θ/ /ð/ are dental fricatives.
- /f/ and /v/ are labiodental fricatives.
- unvoiced glottal fricative /h/
- sibilants:
- /s/ and /z/ are alveolar sibilants
- /ʃ/ and /ʒ/ are palato-alveolar sibilants
