Free response item

From Teflpedia

A free response item is a test item to which the test taker may choose whether or not to provide an item response.

Test takers may skip or pass over such items if they don’t know the answer. They may be pressed by a time limit and choose to answer other questions. Additionally, Multiple choice free response items may have a correction for guessing that penalises guessing.

This is typical of paper-based testing, in which the test paper is submitted and marked sometime after the test taker takes it. The alternative, namely to fail the test taker for not responding to one item, is not realistic. With computer-based testing, the test item must have a selectable “skip” option.

Contrast forced choice item.

The term free response item is often confused with extended response item.[1] Actually, free response items may be extended response items, short response items or selected response items.
