From Teflpedia

Ever is an English indefinite frequency adverb.

It's often confusing for EFL learners.

Ever is used in questions, e.g. Have you ever been to Australia? - but not the answer to the question. We say Yes, I have been to Australia, rather than *Yes, I have ever been to Australia.

Ever has a negative form never, formed by prefixation of negative n-. Speakers tend to say never instead of not ever.[1]

It also forms compound words:

  • forever, (with the prespostion for)
  • however, whatever and whoever

And also every.
