An essay mill (/ˈes.eɪ ˈmɪl/) is a service business that offers essay writing of academic essays to clients.[1] Those clients are typically university students, and the ostensible reason given for the service is to provide "examples of academic work" to "assist students in their studies". In reality, such essays serve little, if any, pedagogical purpose, and their real purpose, understood by both providers and clients, is to be used for plagiarism.
Plagiarism detection presents obvious problems as there is no text to compare it against.
