⟨dj⟩

From Teflpedia
(Redirected from Dj)

⟨dj⟩ is a consonant digraph occasionally found in English, consisting of the letters D and J.

In English spelling, this represents a voiced palato-alveolar affricate /ʤ/ sound, particularly in words derived from Arabic, as in djinn, djebel.[1] Spelling these with a J can cause problems in languages such as German where J represent a yod sound. Or in names such as that of the Serbian public health hazard Novak Djokovic.

It also occurs in some words in coda position, such as hadj.[2]

It also occurs as a letter combination across syllable boundaries, e.g. adjutant; this is not a digraph.
