Covert error

From Teflpedia

A covert error is an error that occurs in an utterance or sentence that is superficially well-formed but differing in meaning from the speaker/writer’s intended meaning.

For example, an EFL learner may say “We’re here for three weeks” (meaning “we’re staying here for three weeks in total”) while actually intending to mean “We’ve been here for three weeks.”

Pragmatic considerations may help the teacher identify such errors. Questions can be asked to check if necessary.
