Generic he

From Teflpedia
(Redirected from Common he)

Generic he or common he uses the 3rd person masculine singular pronoun set (he/him/his/himself), generically, i.e. to represent a typical person.

Since people can't typically be said to be male (in fact, a slight majority are female), this is not gender neutral language and in contemporary English, particularly contemporary formal English, is generally disapproved of.

Alternatives include singular they, generic one, or using he/she.
