Colonialism (/kəˈləʊnɪəlɪzm/) is a form of imperialism, extending a nation's rule over foreign nations, with the additional aim of occupying the subjected country with settlers. These settlers spread the culture, including the language, of the imperial country.

Historically English was a colonial language, with the United States and the British Empire colonies of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. There are sensitivities in this area that are worth noting.
