Charles Dickens (/ˈʧɑ:(r)lz ˈdɪkɪnz/, 1812-1870) was an English author. His novels are popular source material for graded readers, e.g. 
The adjective Dickensian can be used to describe Victorian squalor. He is not however responsible for the exclamation "What the Dickens?!" which dates to Shakespeare.
