A candidate number is an identification number, which may be alphanumeric, used to pseudonymously and uniquely identify a test taker in a test, especially a high-stakes examination.
Test takers are assigned numbers and instructed to include these, rather than their names, on the answer sheet. This enables blind marking by the test markers.
