⟨bt⟩

From Teflpedia
(Redirected from Bt)

⟨bt⟩ is an English consonant digraph consisting of B and T.

/t/ sound t sound

It can be found in words, principally debt /det/, doubt /daʊt/, subtle /ˈsʌ.təl/, and derivations thereof, where B is a silent B — a silent letter.

This letter combination also occurs across morpheme boundaries, e.g. in subtitle — in this case, it’s not a digraph, since digraphs cannot occur across morpheme boundaries, but represents a coda /b/ of one syllable followed by an onset /t/ belonging to the next syllable.[1]
