The Bible

The Bible (/ðə baɪbəl/) is a collection of texts considered sacred by followers of various religions, principally the Christian and Jewish religions.[1] The precise make-up of the Bible varies somewhat; some texts are considered canon by some groups others not. The term is somewhat ambiguous, and “The Bible" unqualified in English language cultural contexts more likely refers to the Protestant canon than other versions.
The Bible has been significant in Western canon; it "has done more to shape literature, history, entertainment, and culture than any book ever written. Its influence on world history is unparalleled.”[2]
Many words, proverbs and idioms have origins in Bible myths, e.g. scapegoat, shibboleth
Historically, a lot of the teaching of English was done by missionaries, who had the primary aim of proselytising their religion.
There are various translations of the Bible for English language learners available, should they be thus inclined. Religion is a PARSNIP however, so must be treated carefully. Many are highly sceptical of its claims.[3]
The word Bible (n), Biblical (adj) and Biblically (adv) are usually capitalised when referring specifically to the Jewish/Christian religious texts.[4]
