Auxiliary contraction
From Teflpedia
An auxiliary contraction is a contraction of an auxiliary verb, particularly those in English[1].
This occurs with two of the primary modal verbs, i.e. be and auxiliary have:
Auxiliary verb | Uncontracted form | Contrated form | Example(s) |
---|---|---|---|
be | am | ’m | I’m |
is | 's | he’s, she’s, it’s, Alice’s, that’s | |
are | 're | we’re, you’re, they’re, Alice and Bob’re | |
Auxiliary have | have | 've | we’ve, you’ve, they’ve, |
has | 's | he’s, she’s, it’s, Alice’s, that’s | |
had | 'd | I’d, you’d, he’d, she’d, it’d, we’d, they’d, Alice’d |
These are always stressed.
