Au pair

From Teflpedia

An au pair (/əʊ peə/, plural au pairs /əʊ peəz/) is domestic assistant from a foreign country working for, and living as part of, a host family.[1]

An au pair’s duties typically include childcare for the host family, which in non-English speaking countries may involve teaching English as a foreign language, particularly to young learners, though this may extend to older siblings as well. An au pair who teaches English in such a context may or may not be a native English speaker. Typically, the au pair spends some time studying the host country’s language; if the au pair is working in an English-speaking country, that would naturally include studying English as a foreign language. An au pair may also use English as a lingua franca to communicate.

Au pairs are typically young adults without significant previous work experience. There are more women working as au pairs than men.[2] Typically, au pairs are hired through au pair agencies. Special visas may be available to au pairs.
