Æ, lower case æ, known as an ash (/æʃ/) is a ligature of the Latin alphabet letters A and E.

Æ is sometimes found in English words, e.g. encyclopædia, etc. Wiktionary has a category[1] In all cases in contemporary English it tends to be written as a digraph of two separate letters, i.e. "ae". Particularly in American English it can also be written as a single "e".

/æ/ is also used as a phonemic symbol.
