Approach to linguistics

From Teflpedia

An approach to linguistics is a philosophical view of linguistics. Generally, there are two approaches, prescriptivism and descriptivism.

Descriptivism aims to analyse and explain how language is used in real life. Prescriptivism however aims to state how language should be used according to an ideal.

Modern linguists are nearly always descriptivist.

A third way is possible if one documents the concerns of prescriptivists, and notes their recommendations for or against certain usage without endorsing the value judgement concerned.
