Accent reduction

From Teflpedia

Accent reduction is the process of trying to reduce one's accent towards a standard, either for the sociolinguistic prestige of a particular accent or for increased comprehensibility. In the latter case, foreign language learners with poor accents will usually benefit from increased comprehensibility. However, a learner with a moderate accent will usually be mostly comprehensible and see little increase in comprehensibility if they further improve their accents.
