From Teflpedia

-ship is an English noun suffix. It is added to nouns to "form a new noun denoting a property or state of being, time spent in a role, or a specialised union".[1]

e.g. friend --> friendship.

There are many words ending ship,[2] though not all of these use this suffix; those that don't use the nautical meaning of ship, e.g. flagship.
