-ous
From Teflpedia
-ous is an adjective suffix used in adjective formation from nouns in English meaning “to denote possession or presence of a quality in any degree, commonly in abundance.”[1]
It’s sometimes spelt -ious[2][3]
Examples include bulb + -ous → bulbous courage + -ous → courageous joy + -ous → joyous poison + -ous → poisonous riot + -ous → riotous, etc.[4][5][6]
Adjectives like this are in turn, nominalised with -ity, e.g. religious → religiosity, with the U being dropped (U dropping).
A few words end in -ous but don’t contain this morpheme, e.g. nous, yous, sous, etc.
