-ness

From Teflpedia

-ness is an English noun suffix. It is commonly added to adjectives to nominalise them; it is also occasionally added to non-adjectives.

There are several words that use this[1]

Adjectives ending -y are changed to i, through final y transformation, e.g. lazy --> laziness. However this does not occur when the -y is part of the root, e.g. spryspryness.

Nouns with this suffix are stressed in the standard way for nouns:

  • Oo, e.g. redness
  • Ooo e.g. awfulness

That means the e is reduced to a schwa sound.
