A lexical verb, also known as a full verb or main verb, is a verb which has meaning. There are a potentially infinite number of lexical verbs and they may be added to the language when necessary, consequently they are an open class.

This may be contrasted with modal verbs and auxiliary verbs both of which are closed classes - verbs groups which may only rarely be added to or changed.
