The use of dictations, possibly because of the negative association with boring, seemingly pointless dictations during one's own schooling, way back when, or as a result of the evolution towards more student-centred classroom activities, seems to have fallen out of favour among language teachers. Some coursebooks, such as The Cambridge English Course (CEC) included a more challenging format, with isolated, single sentences spoken at natural speed.
- Students - and teachers - can check that what is heard really corresponds to what was said - and understood...

- I regularly use the CEC formula (see above) with students of all levels. They find it challenging and it helps them become aware of areas they need to practise more, be they spelling-, grammar-, listening-related.--Technopat 20:20, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
